Strawberry Chocolate Hand Pies

garnished and chocolate drizzled hand pies with valentines day sprinkles

These Strawberry Chocolate Hand Pies are truly the best! Buttery puff pastry loaded with strawberry jam and then drizzled with chocolate – make them heart shaped for Valentine’s Day as a treat!

You guys! I think this could be the cutest recipe I’ve ever made. Who doesn’t love heart shaped treats on Valentine’s Day?! These are so festive, fun and of course, most importantly, delicious!

Ever since our first Valentine’s Day together, 5 years ago (whaaat!! How has it been that long?!) Ben and I have a tradition to stay at home and cook a meal together at home. It always consists of steak, roasted garlic mashed potatoes and my infamous best stovetop mac and cheese

We split a bottle of wine and just have a wonderful time reminiscing on our love story.

This year, you best believe I am going to be making these as a fun Valentine’s Day treat!

Why I Love These Pies:

First, who doesn’t love a good HAND HELD pie?! You can take it on the go, eat it while you’re at your computer, whatever you want!

Obviously anything chocolate and strawberry is super popular near February 14th, and I love that these are so EASY to make. Believe me, I love a good chocolate dipped strawberry more than anyone – but if I can have something like this, so simple, has amazing flavor, and add in the buttery puff pastry?! I’m sold!

Yes, speaking of puff pastry, I used store bought puff pastry – Wewalka specifically. No, this post is NOT sponsored – I’ve just always loved them and am so happy when I do get to work with them. I honestly love their product so so much!

Using store bought puff pastry makes these extra simple. And extra cute!

The puff pastry gets perfectly golden brown, SO flaky and super buttery.

A big dollop of strawberry jam awaits you as you bite into the hand pie and drizzling the chocolate on top is a MUST.

The warm chocolate on top combined with the gooey jam and the buttery pastry. Yes please!

So let’s get into what you need to make them!

Ingredients You Need:

  • 13.2 oz package of store bought puff pastry
  • Strawberry preserves
  • Egg wash
  • Chocolate chunks/chips
  • Fun seasonal sprinkles (if desired)

How to Make Hand Pies:

Begin by preheating the oven to 400 degrees. If you’re using Wewalka puff pastry, you know that the puff pastry already comes wrapped in parchment paper. If not, add parchment paper to your favorite baking sheet and set it aside for now.

Next, take a large heart shaped cookie cutter and then cut out 6 large hearts in the puff pastry. It should look something like this:

Feel free to use a knife to cut out tiny hearts with the leftover puff pastry as to not waste it 🙂

Next, add in about 1 tbsp of strawberry preserves to the middle of HALF of the hearts.

Carefully take the other half of the hearts and one by one, place them on top of the heart with the jam. Take a fork and seal the edges by crimping them together with a fork. It will look something like this:

Then, gently beat an egg in a bowl to make egg wash and brush the tops of the hearts with the egg wash. Poke a few holes in the top of the pastry with a fork.

And then you’re ready to bake! Bake for 14-16 minutes or until golden brown perfection.

Let them cool for 10 minutes or so. Then melt your chocolate and drizzle it generously over top of the cooled off pies.

If desired, add on fun Valentine’s Day sprinkles!

Time to eat up! Pack them up to send them to someone you love, place them in a neighbors mailbox or just surprise your significant other with a fun brunch or dessert option.

Pie Pro Tips:

When you’re melting the chocolate, add a little bit of coconut oil in it. It will make it SO smooth and easy to drizzle.

Try out different types of preserves in the middle – I bet my 3 Ingredient Blackberry Jam would work amazing!

Not a chocolate fan? Try a simple vanilla icing made with powdered sugar, vanilla extract and milk. Whisk all 3 together until desired consistency is reached.

Instead of drizzling, you could always straight up DUNK the hand pies in chocolate because you love yourself!

I hope you guys love these hand pies as much as I do – enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 (13.2 oz) package of THAWED store bought puff pastry
  • 6-8 tbsp strawberry preserves
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 beaten egg
  • valentines sprinkles (if desired)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Roll out the puff pastry (see notes if you’re not using Wewalka brand) and using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut it into 6 equal hearts (see photo above for reference)

  2. To the middle of 3 of the hearts, add about 1 tbsp of strawberry preserves and slightly spread it around.

  3. Take the 3 hearts that you DIDN'T add preserves to and gently place them over top of the ones with the jam. Make sure that the edges line up and then crimp them with a fork to seal it. Make sure you crimp well to avoid jam leaking!

  4. Use the fork to poke a few holes in the tops of the hearts.

  5. If you have any leftover puff pastry, feel free to use a knife or pizza cutter to create tiny hearts or other shapes.

  6. Lightly beat an egg in a small bowl to make egg wash and brush it over top of the pastries.

  7. Add the parchment paper and the pastries onto a baking sheet.

  8. Bake for 14-16 minutes or until golden brown and crispy!

  9. Remove onto a wire rack to let cool.

  10. In a small bowl, add the chocolate chips and coconut oil and microwave in 30 second increments to melt until smooth and drizzle-able. Once the hearts are fully cooled, drizzle the chocolate over top of the pies.

  11. If desired, add on fun sprinkles! Or some flaky sea salt. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

If you are NOT using Wewalka puff pastry, which conveniently comes with parchment paper, make sure to 1) slice the dough on parchment paper and 2) make sure to use a silicon mat or parchment paper on your baking sheet!
