Spicy Grapefruit Margarita

This Spicy Grapefruit Margarita is the perfect way to celebrate warmer weather! Loaded with fresh grapefruit juice and spicy jalapenos, it’s spicy, salty, sweet and SO refreshing! 

Hi, it’s me and it’s time for another cocktail! Y’all know that I love to do cocktails seasonally here on OBB. Take for instance, the 2 week period that blood oranges are in stock? Gotta make the Blood Orange Mojito. 

Or when Summer rolls around and peaches are in season, hello Peach Thyme Spritzer! 

But for now, I’m celebrating the end of citrus season (although let’s be honest, it seems like grapefruits are around a LOT of the year) with this Spicy Grapefruit Margarita! 

Why You’ll Love this Drink: 

To me, nothing beats sitting on the back porch under some twinkle lights with the sun beating down on you sipping on a margarita. There is just something so classic and understated about this cocktail! 

And while I of course, do love the classic – seen here in my Simple Lemon Lime Margaritas, it’s always fun to mix things up every once in a while! 

I love how FRESH this drink is. You use freshly squeezed grapefruit juice which is just incredibly flavorful. It’s tart, juicy and so crisp!

As you know, fresh grapefruit is pretty tart and not super naturally sweet. So, it pairs perfectly with homemade simple syrup. You can make this drink as sweet as you want it!

Oh, and want to know what else pairs perfectly with the sweetness? Hi muddled jalapenos!

You muddle the jalapenos WITH the tequila and let me tell you, it adds a great deal of spice! 

However, when all put together, it creates this perfect medley of sweet, savory, and spicy all in one. 

And if you want it salty, add a salt rim! Want it a little extra sweet? Make it a sugared rim! 

You can totally de-seed the jalapenos if you want to keep it less spicy or hello if you like SUPER spice keep those seeds in there! I love how this drink is so versatile – you can truly make it as SPICY as you want it. 

So let’s get into exactly what you need to make this fun beverage! 

Ingredients You Need: 

  • Silver tequila 
  • Grapefruit
  • Limes 
  • Jalapeno 
  • Simple syrup 
  • Club soda or plain seltzer to top (if desired!) 
  • Salt 

Best Margarita Making Tips: 

Start off by slicing and dicing all of the fruit and veggies you’ll need. For this recipe, you’ll need a grapefruit (just half of one for one drink!), ½ of a jalapeno and a lime. 

Now that you have all of that out of the way, if you want your drink LESS spicy, de-seed the jalapeno. If you don’t mind the spice, add the jalapeno to a cocktail strainer with your favorite tequila. 

Using a muddler (or just a spoon), muddle the jalapenos to break up the oils/juices into the tequila. Let that sit for 5 minutes or so. 

While that’s sitting, you can go ahead and squeeze your citrus! In a mason jar, squeeze the grapefruit until you have about 2-3 oz. For ease, you can go ahead and squeeze the lime in there as well and mix together.

Once the 5 minutes is up, Add the deliciously tart grapefruit/lime juice into the cocktail strainer as well as about 1 oz of simple syrup. You can use store-bought or homemade. I’ll put homemade instructions in the recipe card 🙂 

Lastly, add some ice into the cocktail strainer. Be sure that the lid is FULLY intact (been there done that, had to clean a lot up lol) and SHAKE shake shake! 

Use a grapefruit or lime wedge to wet the rim of your favorite cocktail glass and either dip it in salt or sugar, depending on your mood. I always prefer salty, not going to lie.

Then, strain the cocktail straight into the glass. Add more ice if you would like. Sometimes I like to add in some bubbles and top with club soda or a plain seltzer – totally up to you though! 

Garnishes: 

Feel free to garnish it with extra grapefruit, a jalapeno slice or even a lime wedge! However you garnish it, I hope you enjoy every last sip! XO – Haylie

Spicy Grapefruit Margarita

Ingredients

  • 2 oz silver tequila 
  • 2 oz freshly squeezed grapefruit juice 
  • 2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice 
  • 1/2 sliced jalapeño, with seeds (or de-seed if you like it less spicy) 
  • 1 oz (or more!) or simple syrup (store-bought or homemade)
  • Club soda or seltzer to top (if desired - can omit!)
  • ice + salt

Instructions

  1. Slice the grapefruit in half and set aside. Slice the jalapenos. De-seed if you want them less spicy. Slice a lime in half.

  2. Add the jalapenos to a cocktail strainer followed by the tequila. Muddle them together using a muddling tool or a spoon to get the juices/oils out. Let sit for about 5 minutes. 

  3. In the meantime, squeeze your fresh grapefruit into a mason jar. Do the same with the lime and you can mix if you’d like.

  4. Add the freshly squeezed juice into the cocktail shaker with the tequila as well as 1 cup of ice and shake shake shake! 

  5. Using a lime or grapefruit wedge, wet the rim of your cocktail glass and then dip in salt. Strain the cocktail into the glass.

  6. Garnish with additional grapefruit slices, lime wedges or jalapeno slices. Also, if you want to add some bubbles, top with seltzer or club soda! Cheers!

Recipe Notes

To make simple syrup, combine 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water. Place it on medium/high heat on the stove until the sugar dissolves into the water, making a syrup like consistency. Let cool and then store in the fridge in a mason jar for up to 5 or so days.
