These Homemade Sushi Bowls with Spicy Mayo are loaded with your favorite sushi fillings and drizzled with a delicious spicy mayo – the best way to have a fun date night at home!
Hey friends! Hope you’re all staying safe and well during this time. I’m SO SO excited to be sharing this recipe with you all!
Growing up in a rural town in the South, needless to say, we didn’t eat much sushi. I wasn’t introduced to it until I was 21 years old. It was on a date with my now husband, I had the California roll – and needless to say, my life was forever changed.
Even now when we eat sushi, we (or maybe it’s just me, ha!) have those warm fuzzy feelings as we think back on our early dating days! It’s always a special, not to mention, delicious time!
I’m going to show you how to create these delicious Homemade Sushi Bowls for the BEST date night at home!
Why You’re Going to Love these Bowls:
It’s everything you love about sushi with about a thousand times less work! No rolling up the rolls, no slicing veggies up super small – just deliciousness in a loaded bowl form!
For this sushi bowl, since it is based on my beloved California roll – I used Aquamar Surimi Flakes!
Now, if you’re not sure what in the world Surimi is…it’s crab flavored seafood made with the highest quality fish! It’s a wonderfully natural source of protein and Aquamar is actually the #1 seller of Surimi! I can see why, y’all.
This is not the imitation crab you’ve had in the past – this absolutely will blow your mind with how good it is because it’s made with REAL wild caught Alaskan Pollock and Pacific Whiting! Oh, and it’s sustainably + ethically sourced! Win win win! It’s the tastiest addition to this Homemade Sushi Bowl!
I also love that these bowls are extremely versatile, meaning you can use pretty much whatever veggie you have in your fridge and can make it work! Scroll down below for a full list of substitutions that I recommend!
Ingredients Needed
- Aquamar Surimi Flakes
- Sushi rice (short grain white rice)
- Seaweed flakes (I used the pre-roasted sheets and then ripped them into small pieces)
- Cabbage mixture (or just carrots)
- Chopped avocado
- Mayonnaise
- Sriracha
- Sesame seeds
Best Tips for Making These Bowls:
The good news about these Homemade Sushi bowls?! They’re insanely simple. I’m going to share a few tips though for the best possible bowl!
Make it FUN! Whether you are having an at-home date night or a fun family night, definitely make these bowls a fun time.
For me, I really enjoyed putting each different ingredient in a little bowl, lining them up and letting me and my husband pick and choose from the different toppings to go on our bowls.
If you do have different vegetables that you want to use, make sure that you have a variety of textures! For example, you wouldn’t want just rice, avocado and spicy mayo because those are all pretty similar in texture. When you add in some carrots, maybe even some pickled onions or fresh ginger – those add a nice crunch!
Although, my bowl is styled and curated to look like this – make sure that you mix up the contents of your bowl! This will ensure that you get lots of flavors in each bite vs. just a big ol hunk of avocado.
Substitution Ideas:
Like I’ve mentioned in this post, during this time, I am all about using what you have in the fridge for the veggies.
Here are some other ingredient ideas that would go well with this bowl:
- Sliced cucumber
- Radish
- Fresh ginger
- Edamame
- Brown rice
- Soy sauce
Overall – these bowls are just mouthwateringly delicious, so fun to make and the best way to spend a Friday evening at home enjoying it with your significant other or your family!

Homemade Sushi Bowls with Spicy Mayo
These Homemade Sushi Bowls with Spicy Mayo are loaded with your favorite sushi fillings and drizzled with a delicious spicy mayo - the best way to have a fun date night at home!
Ingredients
- 1 (8 oz.) package of Aquamar Surimi Flakes
- 1 avocado, chopped
- 2-3 roasted seaweed sheets, chopped into smaller pieces
- 1 cup white rice (any medium/short grained white rice will work)
- 1 cup of pre-shredded cabbage mix (red cabbage, carrots, green cabbage - or any variety ofthese ingredients will work; doesn’t have to be the pre-shredded!)
- Pinch of sesame seeds for garnish
Spicy Mayo
- 4 Tbsp mayonnaise
- 1-2 tsp Sriracha (or more if you like it spicier)
Instructions
-
Cook the rice according to box directions. Once done, season the rice with salt to your liking.
-
While the rice is cooking, dice up all of your sushi bowl toppings: the avocado, the seaweed sheets, the cabbage mixture etc. Set these aside OR put them in separate bowls.
-
Next, make the spicy mayo by combining the mayonnaise with the Sriracha. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired. I recommend starting out with a little Sriracha and gradually increasing -you can always make it more spicy but you can’t exactly take out the spice!
-
Assemble your bowls! I enjoyed putting each ingredient into a different bowl and making a little station where you could “Build your own bowl.” Assemble by adding the rice, followed by the surimi flakes, seaweed, avocado, cabbage mix and drizzle generously with spicy mayo and a pinch of sesame seeds. Enjoy!
Haylie, we love sushi! Even the kiddos are getting into it. These bowls are such a great idea. I love the spicy mayo on top!!
Thank you so much, Katherine 🙂
