These Chocolate Orange Energy Bites are SO good – loaded with hearty, wholesome ingredients – they’re simple to whip up and the best healthier mid-day snack option!
It’s been a while, y’all. I used to be obsessed with energy bites! I would try out all the recipes – I even posted a couple on my blog including my Peanut Butter and Jelly Energy Bites and my Peanut Butter Protein Energy Bites!
I’ve told this story before on my blog but I’ll tell it again because I love it so much – My former roommate in college Molly and I would always be whipping up different batches and keeping them in the fridge. Sometimes we would even be too lazy to roll them up so we would just grab the bowl of mixed ingredients from the fridge and eat it with a spoon. College, am I right?
Anyway – I’m particularly loving this Chocolate Orange Flavor! It’s not overly sweet but has a deep cocoa flavor, a wonderful citrus zest and they are so easily poppable!
Why These are the BEST:
First off – let’s be honest, the BEST thing about Winter is the fact that it’s citrus season. The bright zest of any citrus: lemon, grapefruit, lime and of course, the beloved orange, helps to comfort us in the dead of winter where there is no color around, no leaves on the trees.
It gives us a freshness and vibrancy that is desperately needed in the bleakness of Winter. (PS: sorry if Winter is your favorite season – this is not at all a personal attack, I just happen to prefer Fall!)
And what better pairing for fresh orange than CHOCOLATE?! I mean, cmon! It’s a natural pairing – have you ever had those chocolate oranges at Christmas time?! If you know, you know!
I love that these are made with such wholesome and simple ingredients. I feel like some energy bites call for ingredients that I just don’t keep in my pantry but I almost always happen to have these few ingredients you need for this recipe!
These are fudgy, delicious, chewy, a little sweet and the perfect blend of chocolate and orange. I think you’re going to love them!
Ingredients You Need:
- Rolled oats
- Almonds
- Maple syrup
- Orange zest
- Cocoa powder
- Coconut shreds
- Water
How to Make Energy Bites:
Another reason I just adore this recipe? It’s so easy!!
It’s 100% one of those “place everything in a food processor and blitz it up” type of recipes and I’m here for that in 2021!
So, yeah. That’s pretty much all you do! Ha!
Pulse in the food processor until the ingredients are all combined and can be easily rolled into balls.
If the mixture is still falling apart, add either more almond butter or maple syrup until it is stickier and is easy to roll. However, I found that the measurements I used below in the recipe card worked for me!
Roll 1-2 tbsp worth of the mixture into your hands – I personally did about 2 bite size worth balls. Next, add to a baking sheet and stick in the freezer. Freeze for about 30 minutes or so and then eat up!
I made sure to store mine in the fridge to keep them super fresh – they can be eaten for up to 4-5 days!
When to Eat Energy Bites:
In the morning before a workout!
Mid morning snack to make it through to lunch
Post lunch snack because hi you just can’t wait until dinner
After dinner dessert snack because don’t we all need a little chocolate after dinner?!
Easiest answer? Anytime you want!

Chocolate Orange Energy Bites
These Chocolate Orange Energy Bites are SO good - loaded with hearty, wholesome ingredients - they’re simple to whip up and the best healthier mid-day snack option!
Ingredients
- 1 and 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/4 cup sliced almonds
- 4 tbsp almond butter (can sub a more "natural peanut butter")
- 3 tbsp maple syrup (or more if you want it sweeter!)
- 1 tbsp orange zest (and more to garnish if desired!)
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp flaked coconut shreds (unsweetened)
- 2-3 tbsp of water
Instructions
-
Add all of the ingredients above to a food processor. Pulse until a dough forms - if it's too dry or if it is falling apart, you can add a little bit almond butter or maple syrup to help form the dough until it can be easily moldable in your hands.
-
Using a spoon, scoop 1-2 tbsp of dough into your hands and roll it into a ball. Add to a sheet pan. Continue until the dough is all gone! Put energy bites into fridge to let them chill for 30 minutes. Store in fridge for 4-5 days!
Recipe Notes
I used almond butter for this recipe but you can use a more "natural" peanut butter in place - although it might slightly alter the overall taste!
