This Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is extra moist, loaded with fresh bananas, has chocolate chips in every bite and is a real crowd pleaser!

I’ve always been a fan of any type of banana flavored baked good! Take for example my Lemon Blueberry Banana Bread, Double Chocolate Banana Muffins or even my Banana Bread Overnight Oats! There is something so extra cozy about the natural sweetness of the banana combined with the other goods that make those baked goods so good!
Not to mention, if you ever want to impress anyone – just bake a loaf of this Chocolate Chip Banana Bread for the SMELL ALONE. It will make your house smell like a bakery. So much goodness.
I like this Chocolate Chip Banana Bread because it’s simple but classic. My husband and I have been binging a lot of Great British Baking Show lately – and the amazing Mary Berry always say if you do something simple it must be “sheer perfection”.
And not to toot my own horn, this Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is sheer perfection to me!
I love that it’s super moist, thick slices that are filled with banana flavor. I also love that there are chocolate chips in every single bite! Chocolate chips are my fave.
There is also a bit of a secret ingredient in this recipe. Nothing too crazy – but instead of using greek yogurt or apple sauce to help further moisten the bread – I added….sour cream! Yes, maybe it’s strange. Maybe it’s not. But I surely loved the slight tanginess and rich moist flavor that the sour cream adds.
Ingredients You Need:
- ripe bananas
- butter
- white and brown sugar
- eggs
- sour cream
- vanilla extract
- flour
- baking soda
- salt
- chocolate chips (and lots of ‘em!)
How to Make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread:
This is such a simple and delicious bread to bake. Let’s get into it!
In a large bowl, mash up those ripe bananas! It shouldn’t be too hard if they’re already soft.
Next, melt butter in a small bowl. Add in your brown and white sugar and whisk together until creamy. Add this to the bowl with the mashed bananas and mix to combine.
To the same bowl, add your eggs, sour cream and vanilla extract. Mix to combine.
Using a sifter, add in your flour, baking soda and a pinch of salt. Mix only until incorporated. Don’t overwork it!
Lastly, gently fold in the chocolate chips.
Pour into a greased loaf tin. Sprinkle with extra chocolate chips if desired. Bake until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean!
I love this chocolate chip banana bread because it is such a crowd pleaser! Bake a loaf the night before you have company coming and you’ll have some happy breakfast eaters! Or maybe bake it for family as a late night snack while you’re playing board games.
I personally think this banana bread is best warm with a schmear of butter and a pinch of salt on top. I also like it cold from the fridge. Basically, I’ll eat this anyway you slice it. Breakfast, lunch, dessert or snack! Gimme!

- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 and 1/3 cup all purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda

Grease a 9x5 loaf pan with butter and then line with parchment paper. Add your batter directly to the pan. Top with additional chocolate chips if desired. Bake for 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick can be fully inserted and come out clean.

Once done, let cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes and then remove and place on a cooling rack. Enjoy a slice warm with butter!
Recipe Notes
For this recipe (and most of my recipes), I used salted butter. It's a personal preference. Feel free to use unsalted butter for this recipe.
It looks so chocolatey and delicious.
Thank you so much, Howard!

Hi Lori!! Thank you so much for commenting! I used a 9×5 loaf pan for this recipe! Hope you enjoy! Happy weekend baking!
I made this for my boys (2, 5, and my lover) they absolutely loved it. I even added walnuts for the biggest boy ?❤️ because he loves that. It was a hit. Definitely going to be the version I make from now on.
So sweet! Love that you added walnuts. Thanks for making it for the boys, Jennifer!! 🙂
I loves me some banana bread to, Haylie…especially one with chocolate 😉 This one definitely looks super moist and flavourful! Love a thick ol’ slice this am with my coffee…too bad I couldn’t grab one through my screen 😉
Lol! I wish we could do that with all of our recipes!!! That would be amazing – thank you my friend 🙂
Oh my gosh this recipe is AMAZING, and not to mention super easy to make! Haylie’s directions are so clear and take the guesswork out of it. My bread turned out perfect (And by no means am I a baker), but we ate half of it in one sitting! Definitely a favorite.
Thank you SO much for your kind review, Katelin! So glad that you and your family enjoyed the bread 🙂
Easily the best banana bread I’ve ever had! The crust has such a wonderful texture and the inside was so light and delicious! Definitely will be making again!
Yay!!! Thank you Kate 🙂 So glad you enjoyed!
So this has basically become my go-to banana bread recipe 😻 sometimes I add a pinch of cinnamon, sometimes I substitute craisins and nuts for the chocolate chips. My family loves this and has started setting bananas aside from the bunch to ripen specifically for me to make this – as soon as we’ve finished one loaf, they’re ready for another 😹
Yessss!!! This makes me so happy and I absolutely love all of the additions/substitution ideas! It all sounds so delicious. Thanks for loving this recipe, Joan! Means the world 🙂
