Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

This Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is extra moist, loaded with fresh bananas, has chocolate chips in every bite and is a real crowd pleaser!

I’ve always been a fan of any type of banana flavored baked good! Take for example my Lemon Blueberry Banana Bread, Double Chocolate Banana Muffins or even my Banana Bread Overnight Oats! There is something so extra cozy about the richness of the banana combined with the extra sugar all baked snug in a loaf. Not to mention, if you ever want to impress anyone – just bake a loaf of this Chocolate Chip Banana Bread for the SMELL ALONE. It will make your house smell like a bakery. So much goodness.

I like this Chocolate Chip Banana Bread because it’s simple but classic. My husband and I have been binging a lot of Great British Baking Show lately – and the amazing Mary Berry always say if you do something simple it must be “sheer perfection”. And not to toot my own horn, this Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is sheer perfection to me!

I love that it’s super moist, thick slices that are filled with banana flavor. I also love that there are chocolate chips in every single bite! Chocolate chips are my fave.

There is also a bit of a secret ingredient in this recipe. Nothing too crazy – but instead of using greek yogurt or apple sauce to help further moisten the bread – I added….sour cream! Yes, maybe it’s strange. Maybe it’s not. But I surely loved the slight tanginess and rich moist flavor that the sour cream adds.

Basic Ingredients You’ll Need to Make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread:

  • ripe bananas
  • butter
  • white and brown sugar
  • eggs
  • sour cream
  • vanilla extract
  • flour
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • chocolate chips (and lots of ‘em!)

How to Make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread:

This is such a simple and delicious bread to bake. First, melt you butter in a small bowl. Add in your brown and white sugar and whisk together until creamy. In another bowl, mash up those ripe bananas! It shouldn’t be too hard if they’re already soft. Add the sugar/butter mixture to the mashed bananas. To the same bowl, add your eggs, sour cream and vanilla extract. Mix to combine.

Using a sifter, add in your flour, baking soda and a pinch of salt. Mix  only until incorporated. Don’t overwork it!

Lastly, gently fold in the chocolate chips.

Pour into a greased loaf tin. Sprinkle with extra chocolate chips if desired. Bake until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean!

I love this chocolate chip banana bread because it is such a crowd pleaser! Bake a loaf the night before you have company coming and you’ll have some happy breakfast eaters! Or maybe bake it for family as a late night snack while you’re playing board games.

I personally think this banana bread is best warm with a schmear of butter and a pinch of salt on top. I also like it cold from the fridge. Basically, I’ll eat this anyway you slice it.

  • 4 medium ripe bananas
  • 1/2 cup melted butter (1 stick)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 and 1/3 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt

  1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. In a large bowl, mash your ripe bananas until fully mashed. Set aside. In a smaller bowl, melt your butter. To the melted butter, add your granulated and brown sugar. Using a whisk, whisk together until creamy.

  2. Directly add the butter/sugar mixture to the large bowl with the mashed bananas. Next, add in your eggs, sour cream and the vanilla extract. Mix to combine.

  3. Using a sifter, sift the flour, baking soda and salt into the banana mixture. Mix only until incorporated. Don’t over mix!

  4. Gently fold in 1/2 cup of semi sweet chocolate chips.

  5. Grease a loaf pan with butter and then line with parchment paper. Add your batter directly to the pan. Top with additional chocolate chips if desired. Bake for 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick can be fully inserted and come out clean.

  6. Once done, let cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes and then remove and place on a cooling rack. Enjoy a slice warm with butter!

Recipe Notes

For this recipe (and most of my recipes), I used salted butter. It's a personal preference. Feel free to use unsalted butter for this recipe.

I made this for my boys (2, 5, and my lover) they absolutely loved it. I even added walnuts for the biggest boy ?❤️ because he loves that. It was a hit. Definitely going to be the version I make from now on.
